CAP upped by 0.25

Tragic. I think it's so tragic.

CAP: 3.65
(CAP computed is accurate based on progress &
declaration made as at time of printing.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gosh I can't believe it. After reading the whole of Severin 3rd edition while the rest of the world was reading 5th edition, after getting A- for globalization term paper, after all the days doing the stupid PR project and after spending so much $$$, I have only managed to up my CAP by 0.25.

0.25! That's a quarter! It highly doesn't make sense how CAP works. I-I'm unable to rationalize the computation. I'm feeling nauseous. It's like, so much work, at such a low wage. Projecting this, it'll take another 3 semesters before I could smell a 4. Plus, it's not always upwards right? Sometimes it'll take a plunge, especially when we're talking about level 2000 and 3000 modules.

3.4, 3.65, 3.8, 4.05?...

Another reason why I'm feeling nauseous is because I didn't do well for my designated major modules. Funny right? Looks like I could do well in biz modules and better off in biz. And to think that I have not done a science gem. The thought makes me shiver.

Why do I suddenly care about my CAP? Hahaha, let's just say I'm competing with myself. It's like an internal promise that I unconsciously made. And now I'm so motivated by xiang yuan's aim to hit 5.0. This is the person who walks around with a 4.7 on his score card.

So similarly, I am the person walking around with 3.65 on my score card and will motivate myself to hit 4.0. Having a CAP of 5.0 looks kind of unrealistic actually. Looks kind of fake, probably. I think 4.8 sounds like a reasonably impressive CAP because it's so close to perfection and yet realistic.

And like what Vicino said, winning an argument doesn't mean you're right. It merely means you're better at arguing. Similarly, having a CAP of 5.0 doesn't mean you're smart. It merely means you're...smart. OKAY fine I said it... -.-"

To Err is Human.
To Love are Cadets!!!
_________________________

I've just had the dalam bukah of my life and it's so refreshing to hang around the 15 year olds because they were both cute and irritating at the same time, which makes me love my SQUAD 3!!!

Then today I brought my unit to shoot, then I saw swiss cottage boys and they said hi to me. They remembered me! So sweet! I was like so dalam bukah and the Chestnut girls also, they saw me this morning and waved to me. I've never felt so good before.

So here are some photos that i managed to take despite my lao pok dalam bukah camera and the painful kok dalam bukah shoes and when it's time to change into PT kit, i was self-rejoicing.
It also happened that several things can go wrong when you are an instructor. I've officially passed on all my knowledge to the other instructors who are taking for the next round so that they won't dalam bukah barisan.

So in SQUAD 3, we have Swiss Cottage boys, Chestnut Drive, Yusof Ishak and CCKSS. (I took my school by accident and got into trouble.. -.-").

When you see them smiling and making friends, and looking at you, with those beautiful eyes, especially during debrief, you just want to melt and wish the day would never end. But of course they have to dalam bukah right. There were some boys who were quite handsome and they got that kind of "youwei" look. And some of them really overcame all odds in coming out to the front to take the squad. People like Johnson, the Yusof Ishak girls, people from Chestnut drive... they gathered up their courage and I love them for that. (partially peer pressure cos everybody did it hahaha) :)
And i remember some of their names, like Wei Zong, Imfran, Jasmine, Kyron, Shawn. ohhhh i'll miss your squad so much!!!

So what goes on behind the scenes when the kids are listening to lectures? Haha you wouldn't believe it. We start posing! Look at the lovely lovely dalam bukah photos... oh my tian.. so beautiful. Look at ME! NP's next top model! :) And no, i'm not going to dalam bukah anything.

The individual shots of me were taken by Muhamad Omar bin Sharif. He's got an eye for these kind of things (like me) hahahahahaa love it.
Harmony hall is like so dalam bukah i can't stand it.
Check out the meera-catching-omar shot!

Oh my gosh this is the Photo of the Year. Look at me and goh tee wei siaoing under the light. It's "bloody 1x" beautiful! And i can never forget what he said "Can you please share the light???" hahahahahhaa so dalam bukah right?? >.<

And through this course I made better friends with Bee and Xin Hui, and Hui Ping. Hahaha awesome stuff. Also realized that Yan Bo is also becoming friendlier, i mean, he's more dalam bukah barisan now. Jie Hui's lecture was the best to my cadets. It kind of went downhill from there, they claim. and the games were soooo INSANELY full-fledged CHAOTIC it's like like like a million prisoners on the loose!
At the end of the course I told my cck that I wanted to see them. Then i dalam bukah barisan them and give them 1x good one. Then I concluded by telling them that once they step out of the hall, I want to see leaders. Then they dalam bukah and yes mam me. Hais.

The next morning I told them meet me at 0730. They were punctual and at the ranch I almost succumbed to tears cos I was so touched. They're such a dalam bukah bunch of kids and I love them dearly. Hais. They apologized to me for the poor shoot results but I told them

"We love UOPA, but we love you MORE."
But it was fun.. and.. my dear dear squad 3,
keep it there, Meera and I are behind you all the way! :)

The Society of Others
_______________________

My friend called that day, and started complaining about her interviews. She had a grand total of THREE interviews this week, and she complained to me that she did well in the interview that she didn't really want the job, and flopped badly in the other two interviews which she wanted the jobs so badly. Kind of strange, isn't it? Makes me wonder if sometimes we try so hard to impress that we look completely like idiots and when we don't bother to impress, we tend to be ourselves.

Which is the way I think we should all be.

Why does my friend, along with tens of thousands of others, find themselves in a race to get a 9 to 5 job? The thought would be what Gui De would call "sick". Haha in fact Gui De has pronounced me "sick" probably because of the way I speak of the cadets. When you converse with him, you find that sometimes he makes sense.

Like how UOPA has changed people who were once passionate. Like how passion has changed into responsibility. Like how doing something was for the school and the thought of everything that happened was a lie. Like how a camp isn't a camp without outdoor cooking. Like the way debriefs should be. Like how the army boys couldn't outdoor cook if they didn't learn it in NP.

Like how my CI said sadly to me that year after year, they do up the UOPA and it's the whole same darn thing. Which is kind of true. It's some sort like a trade-off, like a deal, like, a deal that society conforms to.

So I guess like a 9 to 5 job, a person may have a lot of passion for it at first, but after time, he may be working out of responsibility. Parallel to this would probably be my guides, like, how passion eventually turned into responsibility. Also, like the piano. Passion-turned-responsibility. Or maybe I'm not one to stay in cycles. (hahaha other than the menstrual cycle?) There has come to be a day I have to break free from the cycle and include an additional element, to make things a tad more interesting.

Talking about the menstrual cycle, I'm proud to announce that it's the time of the month. Like how babe would ask me how much is the 'monthly' for the petrol and I'd tell her about 8 pads each month. There was one day I was sleeping on the floor of the living room (YES it's COOLING) one hot afternoon, and suddenly I woke up and when I went to the toilet I groaned at the first signs of blood but it's not that bad because it hasn't officially stained any...er...cloth.

So one saturday morning I woke up bright and early to attend the Area 20 Survival Camp meeting. It was for the CIs, mind you, but i thought i'd go to add value to my school. Nah, just kidding. I wanted to go so that I knew what was going on. And basket, I kenna arrow by the oic to do things. Next thing I know? I'M LOGISTICS IN-CHARGE because my dear CI can't go for ATC.

You see, I wonder how this balance comes about. Sometimes when people don't turn up, the society of others get a better impression of them as compared to the people who turn up but are unable to commit. You get what i'm saying? As in, if a perpetual person who doesn't turn up for trainings has a non-issue with society as compared to somebody who turns up but does something wrongly or decline to do something. There's this discrepancy that's very disturbing and I've been trying to figure it out.

There's nothing more I'd like to do than living my life in this quiet manner, and allowed to think, and allowed to draw and paint and read and write and sing. Yet we all can't do that otherwise there'll be no money in the pot.

My mom came home at 12.30pm just now and announced that she has just taken a nice walk to the market of the next town. In my head I'm thinking: "Good job, Mom" but out of my mouth came: "Very free." hmm.. I guess I kind of take after my mom? She's the sort to say something like that but we know that she mean it affectionately.

And i find myself in recent times being able to better explain what I mean. (oh great, it's raining!) I guess I can communicate better after being a major in it. Hahaha.

Hey speaking of rain, there was one time this semester I walked in the rain and you know I like rain and so I walked in the rain with my laptop but I covered him with my windbreaker so it was waterproof. The feeling was so nice and when I reached the destinated bus stop, everyone was staring at me because they saw me walking in the rain. Hey! You should try that some day. It's like a new lease of life, and you can't help feeling peaceful.

Benedict's mother called me just now to set the holiday arrangements and to thank me for his good results. Of course I politely declined and said it was all his effort. Come on, i mean, i can't help feeling glad that he improved his grades! :) oh my dear dear benedict. the handsomest primary 4 kid in town!

I had a conference call with ting and ming one silent night. We started talking about snails. "What do you call a snail without the shell?" and "Does a snail come with a shell when it was born?" were the questions we explored. Gosh i'm very sorry but as much as the topic was interesting, I kind of had better things to do? Hahaha. Nah, i'm just kidding. I like talking to them.

I stood at the balcony just now to survey the landscape. When it rains, it looks like someone has covered the scope with some translucent paper. Oh how I love rain. REAL rain, not that bronze singer who I know nothing about except that he had a concert once going for $999 per ticket.

So I sent my aunt and her family to the airport. I was supposed to drive them to the airport but when I walked to the car my mother was already there. Great, mom. Thanks for informing me in advance. Anyway the two of us sent them off. My mom would be joining them overseas too, for a week I think. And it so happens that I have to go atc when she's overseas so that leaves my little brother at home.

My brother just came home from camp and when i opened the door for him i just felt like he's all grown up. *sigh* where was that cute and cuddly brother i once had? hahaha.

nah, he's right here, curled up in his bed, dreaming away in this beautiful raining afternoon. i love you, pete... (FYI that's not his name but that's what i call him)

Post-Exam Galore
___________________________

I met Jiajia and Gui De at King Albert's to discuss our unit's senior nco camp. Turns out that Jiajia just did a tough accountancy paper and even though she studies at SIM, her paper is all the way at EXPO. I think that's kind of insane! If let's say one day NUS decides to have its papers at EXPO, i'll knock at the dean's door to claim transport fees.

So anyway I saw these flowers at king albert's cold storage. And I saw the most perfect roses there (look at the pink roses!) and just look at the rows of flowers they have! I remember the God-inspired entry from anne's blog and I must say yes, these roses were crafted so immaculately that I stared at them for so long. You should have seen them in real life. They were absolutely flawless and perfect in every way.

So today I went bugis with hilda (and FYI for those who are confused: hilda is my real life friend. I'm not making it up. -.-") and we ate some jap food at basement bugis. Because it was vesak day today, you can only guess the squashness of the bugis market. It was madness. I keep drinking because they were all going for a dollar and I drank to my heart's content. I LOVE DRINKING.

She was telling me about her soul's experience. During one of those power praying sessions, suddenly everyone around her started speaking in tongues, and soon after she felt her soul lifted up from her body and floated in the air, and she had this very light, carefree feeling from the holy spirit.

And she concluded by telling me to give it a shot. I was like, well, I'm kind of a stately follower and I'm probably not on for these things. The last words she said to me before we parted ways was: I'll see you in chuch on saturday.

It was like words from the skies because well frankly, I haven't been going to church so,.. I really should start going again.

So one picture-perfect Saturday I decided to go hiking with van. Well, it was quite breathtaking, literally, because I puked at the top of Bt Timah hill, which was a disgrace because there were TWO CHINA KIDS that walked past me and cried "Ni kan! You ren zai na bian tu!" which means "Look! Someone is puking!"

Great. I needed all the attention I can get. -.-" And before I puked i actually felt the world around me closing in.. my vision was kinda going grey, and the world tunnels my vision.. till I pua doh on the grass and starting puking the delicious breakfast this morning and possibly even drowned an ant colony (Sorry, Anne).

So at the base of the hill I was telling van about my romance story in primary 4. How me and this guy got separated from the rest of the group while tracking in the forested area, and how he led the way and how we sat on a rock at the base of the hill, and how he plucked a flower for me. I swear it's a true story and it's one of the most romantic experiences I had as a 10-year-old.

And, inspired by the story of Yang Guo and his aunt from Xuang Tian Zhi Zun at that time, (oh shit, i mean, oh shit I can't remember the name of the show. OH! i remember liao, it's Sheng Diao Xia Lui. Muahaha I used to love watching the show) the guy and I made a promise to meet at SPCA when we were sixteen. Hahaha of course I didn't go SPCA when i turned 16. The idea was pretty zany. :) Well he probably wouldn't remember me at all anyway. I mean, we were TEN!

So you probably wonder where is this blue-sky place that van, babe and i went to. It's called West Coast Park, a park that is so miserable compared to East Coast. And for those of you who are not in the photo, I'm very sorry, this was all an ad-hoc event and everything was impromptu so that's why we didn't extend invites to the whole world.

There was one photo in which I looked like I ran in from somewhere and then plopped down just in time for the camera to snap. I thought I'd just upload it for fun's sake.

So one fine day, ade van anne and i decided to go to plaza sing to catch this movie called IRON MAN. And I've concluded the movie by announcing I'm IRON MAN too.

Great movie, btw. Great sounds and robert's kinda hot and cute at the same time. Oh ROBBY!

So halfway during the outing I wanted to take photos? and the rest of them went "We're past that stage, blah blah blah" they just carried on ranting and as if I could catch everything because they were all talking at the same time. They firmly concluded that they don't like to take photos ANYMORE.

And this photo that you see with us all in it? I had to PLEAD with them to take the photo with me. JUST ONE. Can you believe it? I can't! I-I simply can't! How can you possibly not like taking photos anymore? It's like saying that ice milo has disappeared from the face on the earth! Or, like saying that essence of chicken comes from ducks! It's absolutely insane and incredibly...insane!

And then we past by the sex shop in PS. There were 101 games in bed. And they had to ask me if I think i'm successful. Of course not, i replied. Then they held up this sign that says that by 20 years old, we should have had sex. That is success.

Gosh, i guess i have about half a year left to lose my virginity. -.-" YA RIGHT!

What's this sick photo, you ask? Well, this is a shot to showcase our twin peaks of life. GOSH, i think you'll be thinking LN, SO GROSS! But well, i treasure good times like these.

So we ate at Ajisen, where the ramen is fundamentally ramen. The totaly bill for two came up to $32.80. It's incredibly expensive! But then we had fried tofu and also PRAWN WITH MAYO. It's crazily tasty.

So this was the dress that I really contemplated buying when I went out with beef before she flew to germany.

It's SGD$83 and it's the most picture-perfect dress ever. I almost bought it. Meaning, I didn't buy.

For the first time in my life, I have survived an impulse purchase and pocketed the $83 that I almost spent on this farmer dress.

Love it, absolutely. :)

Eye of the Storm
_______________________

TV covered today about Nargis, Burma's new lingo. Then how timely, in came the mail and my best friend, TIME mag fell into my hands. Hannah Beech reported from Irrawaddy Delta, where Nargis struck and moved inland. Several towns and villages were affected, and i guess with so many people out there doing their part for the victims, i guess i can do my part right here by creating some sort of awareness of how serious this matter is.

So other than the shortage of water, lack of lodging, lack of food and sanitation, those luckier ones seek shelter in monasteries and schools that are still standing. Luckier ones are also those who received food (albeit rotted rice).

To be politically correct and not to plagarize, i declare here that i take reference from the TIME article:

That the regime is believed to be "more concerned with keeping foreigners out than allowing aid in". The death toll will even double if international relief is not permitted soon. Makeshift refugee camps in monasteries and schools are beginning to show signs of disease. A hospital in Rangoon is out of fully trained medical staff, so they now send interns out to help.

Said the UN's former emergency-relief coordinator Jan Egeland, "We're in 2008, not 1908." Seasonal monsoons are expected to further affect these areas and the people without shelter will be vulnerable. "junta...get away with murder".

Activists in Rangoon who were part of an underground group that includes students and Buddhist monks urge foreign governments and the UN to intervene immediately instead of waiting for permission from the junta. They cried "Just Come Now".

To sidetrack a little, this is in line with my PS1101E and GEK1041 where i first learnt about the westphalian principles of non-interference and sovereignty of states. There is currently a French ship waiting outside Myanmar for clearance before the whole shipfull of food can be distributed to the hungry. Everywhere, food and medical supplies are on standby, and these supplies come from Singapore, Italy, Malaysia and many other countries who face the same problems of obtaining permission. Westphalia is one thing, but how about when it comes to hundreds and thousands of lives? Westphalia is kind of outdated, isn't it, considering the level of world integration today?

This is a country where one-third of the kids were already undernourished even before Nargis. Yet the junta apparently spent millions of dollars constructing a new capital. I saw the photos and the government housing there were about 5-6 stories high, pretty white buildings. And apparently the generals have mowed stretches of green for top commanders to indulge in golf.

In the Irrawaddy delta, the crops have been destroyed. Farmers also can't plant anymore because of the salt-water inundation. There are dead, bloated bodies floating down the river, alongside with buffoloes...the putrid smell of rotting flesh is in the air...nobody came to assess the damages in village after village..

Which leads me to talk about their military junta.
The people do not speak to reporters about their conditions for fear of being punished. The local driver of this reporter was also accused by the guards of bringing foreigners to the disaster area, which shoed his complete abdication of patriotic duty. This "serious violation" would be reported to military headquarters and i wonder what happened to him after that..

In a riverside town of Laputta, soldiers announced that they would be shooting foreigners who wander around after dark. International discussions about dropping aid from the skies are also fuelling the junta's paranoia. Channelnewsasia also tells me that the junta is usually highly suspicious of the outside world, and that infusions may weaken their hold on Myanmar.

Seeing the homeless and hungry, one can only wonder why the soldiers still stand loyal to the junta. I suppose one form of incentive is that people in the military are rewarded for their loyalty and perhaps their families are assured a good life? If I were standing among my ranks and I see everyone around me keeping true to the military, I don't think stepping out would be a viable option considering I have a duty to my family too.

Or maybe we could speculate that they are threatened as well. If they leave, they die. Or we can speculate that the military government has greater plans for the country. But come on, at the expense of the hungry and impoverished? The junta has nothing to fear; it has the loyalty of a 450,000-strong military. That's enough to silence activists and radical groups.

People have lost their children, and children have lost their parents. This setback may well be a setback of a decade for Burma, looking at the pictures from various sources. Layman people like you and me probably can't do much for them, except through donations and prayers.

Just a side thought.. I was just thinking.. China has had the snowstorms and earthquakes, tropical storms over in the Philippines, Myanmar with Nargis, Katrina for the US..is this some sort of a sign of heavenly unhappiness? When you put it like that, it kind of says something, but i'm not sure what.

End of the human cycle Nick told me about?

Done With Year 1!
__________________________

9-5-08 is a very important day in my life.
It is the day I graduated officially from Year 1 in NUS,
and also my first year anniversary with my license! :)

Anyway, the last paper today was my GEK and they changed the exam format from 4 long essay questions to 2 x 20% and 6 x 10% questions.

In other words, a lot of us didn't have time.

Being Arts students, there is no way we can skip the introduction and conclusion in an essay and dive right into the content. We are 'brought up' to give a sound and interesting introduction, and our thesis statement and finally some concluding thoughts at the end of essays. And today was no exception, i was on the brink of spraining my wrist because i had so much words, and so little time to write.

After the exam ended my dear friend Agustin turned back (she was three seats in front of me) and her face was so gloomy. She didn't have time to finish one 10% question. (actually, i only managed to scrape through, i had 5 minutes each for two 10% questions)

So i told her DON'T WORRY cos that 10% essentially makes up 0.14% of her CAP (GPA) and it wouldn't affect her much at all. Hope she's feeling better.

And it's so outrageous, I needed two books to write. There was no way i could have squeezed everything into one book! So I used TWO FULL books. The funny thing is, most people used just one book. I wonder how they do that. I think they must be really concise, straight to the point, people. Me, I even squeezed in talking about American Idol, Martha Stewart and Microsoft and the Narmada Project. Gosh, what was i thinking.

Well, we can only hope for the best. At 11:00 sharp when they said 'No More Writing, Anyone Caught Writing will be blah blah blah..' i just sat there stoning, because it was so draining.

And it's the first time I entered an exam with merely 4 hours of studying.
Ha. Hope the lecturer can read my incoherent blabber.

_____________________________

This whole week I had tuition with my kid benedict. He's by far the handsomest Primary 4 kid in town. Anyway, the point is that he's willing to study, though his attention span is short. So our lessons included 1-minute intervals this week, where he will start spinning on his chair and i turn my head to the fan.

Benedict's mom is also so fine, cos she offered me the following food

I promise you, it's yummy. One day I'll learn how to cook it.
The point is, I really hope all my students do well in their SA1.
My another student wrote me a note saying

Dear Yiping,
Thank you for teaching me!
Love, ZQ

Haha in case you're wondering who's Yiping, it's me.
I use my chinese name reason being that family speaks mandarin.
Other than that i'm more or less known as Ms Chang, lao shi, or teacher.

Obnoxious. Totally.

Did you know?
That, you could cut your finger while doing an exam?

I was thinking out my exam and what crap i could churn out when suddenly this stupid stampler bullet 'chak' into my finger. NO JOKE, okay?! it was soooo painful i had to bite my tongue.

And then the cut started to bleed and until now it's hurting. Hurry heal if not tomorrow's paper i can't write.

Ha. Obnoxious.

_______________________________

Did you know?
That, the feeling of everyone else finishing their exams a day before you is worst than having no sleep for 3 days?

The hall was like cheering and i had to scream to the [almost empty] hall after most people had left 'I HAVE A PAPER TOMORROW YOU &%#^@!

Ha. Obnoxious exam schedules.

____________________________

Did you know?
That, I managed to take SN1101E down.
It was a ay-okay module for me until one and a half hours before the paper, when i realized i only covered 60% of the content and left 40% to chance?

And there i was, comforting a certain someone who scored 60/100 for the midterm test.

How obnoxious.
_____________________________

Did you know?
It's time we all had fun after the exams. It's been a long, obnoxious, semester for all of us. Time to set new resolutions, repair friendships, strengthen relationships, and also start karaoking. Heh heh... Anyone wanna book me for movie or anything???

Anyone knows where i can find money to go visit my family in australia?! hahaha i wanna go australia again SO BAD! :(

Maybe i'll find some good-paying jobs this semester break. When i say good-paying, i mean good-paying. More kids? :)
